Bangladesh and Pakistan accorded mutual recognition on the eve of 2nd Islamic Summit Conference in Lahore on 22 February 1974. The Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh, visited Lahore to attend that Summit.
The Tripartite Agreement among Bangladesh, Pakistan and India signed in New Delhi on 9 April 1974 provided the basis for completion of the process of 3-way repatriation of detained and stranded persons (involving Bengalis in Pakistan, Pakistanis in Bangladesh and Pakistani prisoners of war in India).
The then Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto visited Bangladesh from 27-29 June 1974.
The two countries established resident diplomatic missions in Dhaka and Islamabad at Ambassadorial level in 1976.
